Knowing without doing is like not knowing at all. For each problem there is a solution. A job half done is not a job done at all.
Nowadays, people are becoming more and more aware about the negative impact pollution has on our planet. Marine pollution originating from plastics waste is a huge problem. A recent survey revealed that 8 million tons of plastic waste flows into our ocean each year.
Facts: we all know that plastics constitute a huge problem. But did you know that that there is the “good kind” of plastic and there is the “bad kind of plastic”? The “bad kind” is the one that is derived from propylene, a chemical component of petroleum, which will make it nearly impossible to safely biodegrade in the environment. The “good kind of plastic” is made of biomass and are sourced from natural materials such as corn starch, wheat straw etc… this type will biodegrade within a few months in the right type of environment i.e. if disposed of properly. The problem is that only 1% of the total consumption of plastics is based on renewable raw material.
Question: So what’s the solution? Answer: Go back to basics.
- Ask people to stop using normal plastics bags;
- Start using biodegradable/compostable bags instead;
- Dispose of the waste in the proper bin ready to be collected, sorted out and sent to proper recycled centers.
Everyone of us have a responsibility to bin our waste properly in order to make sure that it does not find its way into waterways, rivers and oceans. PicknBin message is that: “Little things count. Don’t wait for some big hero organization to change the world for you. You are the changes that you want to see in the World”. You will find this message in our song “Letter to the World”.
